Your Autumn/Winter Preview

Ruffles reign supreme, knits make a statement and sportswear grows up

The coming season’s all about creating a maximalist attitude with minimal effort. Rich colours and decadent textures capture the mood, while summer style comes of age without losing its edge: prints are bold yet pared back, sportswear takes on new silhouettes and ruffles continue to steal the show. The overall look? Brazen confidence meets got-my-life-together styling. Grab your favourite pieces below.

Ruffled up

Mini and midi dresses are the unexpected transitional go-to, layering up and down with ease. The key here is texture – ruffles add dramatic volume while lace, velvet and mesh lend a little after-dark excitement.

The layering tip: Drape on a leather jacket when temperatures plummet.

Knitted out

From streamlined polonecks to granny-chic-meets-Yeezy pullovers, knits are back on top as the staple to covet. An insouciant tuck of slightly more voluminous styles will add definition without taking away from the overall look.

The layering tip: Wear an oversized knit with a pleated midi skirt, and balance out the proportions with heeled ankle boots or block-heeled court shoes and socks.

Jack(et) of all trades

For autumn and winter, you should dabble at either end of the simple-to-statement-making spectrum. An ornamental bomber with botanical embroidery establishes itself as a dinner and drinks favourite, while aviator styles will work with your everyday uniform.

The layering tip: Layer slimline staples like shirts and lightweight pullovers so as not to add too much bulk before you’ve even got your jacket on.

Good sport

Silken fabrics and oversized fits combine with big-name brands to take sportswear to luxe new heights. Put a high-fashion spin on an athleisure ensemble with leather slides, small gold hoops and a dark lip colour.

The layering tip: Some recent Instagram stalking led me to a (foolproof) sports luxe theory: the more you layer your lightweight separates like joggers, polonecks, blouses and bombers, the more expensive your outfit will look. Plus, the layers help to elongate your silhouette.

Prints, please

Prints are leaving the carefree chaos of summer behind and taking on a more structure organised feel, but they’re no less playful for it. Look to chevrons, stripes, oversized florals and line patterns.

The layering tip: Clash or double up on prints – the mantra for autumn is ‘more is more’.
