STAYCATION IN STYLE

Our fashion friends share their summer holiday moods

Our summer holidays this year may not be as adventurous as an overseas trip or far away stay, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited to enjoy the warm weather closer to home. Staycations are the new vacations and to help get us into holiday planning mode, we asked some of our fashionable friends to share how they plan on soaking up the sun, the clothing they’ll be dressed in during their downtime and their go-to scents that conjure that summer feeling.

How will you be spending your summer staycation?

Local travel has been very appealing to me lately. I think it’s because I forgot what an amazing country we live in, so I’m definitely looking at coastal staycations as well as the bush. I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety because of everything that has been happening around us due to the pandemic and obviously with 2020 being such an awkward year. My boyfriend and I recently booked ourselves a cute little Airbnb in Llandudno, Cape Town, when the local travel restrictions were lifted and it was honestly the best thing we could’ve done for ourselves. So I want to explore a little more of the Western Cape as well as the Kruger bush.

Describe your staycation style?

Comfortable, relaxed and very resort-like with a lot of class. I’ve been attracted to long voluminous dresses that are light in fabric, satin slip dresses, two-piece suits that are chic and elegant, but also very comfortable and easy to chill in. I also love to make a statement with a huge brimmed straw hat and a pair of chunky earrings.

What or who inspires your aesthetic?

The 80s inspires my aesthetic. There’s something about that era that feeds my soul. And designers like Schiaparelli, that also have 80s references, influence my style, too.

Which factors do you consider when curating your off-duty wardrobe?

I definitely consider quality the most. I love statement pieces that last a lifetime and that I can pass down to my children. I have found some amazing gems in my mother’s and grandmother’s closets that have become very relevant today.

Which accessories are key for your staycation style?

A pair of oversized statement earrings – gold, to be exact. You can never go wrong. A large-brimmed straw hat and a bag… small or big, it doesn’t really matter.

And when it comes to footwear, what are your go-to styles for the season?
A pair of mules and thong-strap flops are a must!

Which fragrances are you spritzing this summer?

I actually have a few. Gucci Flora is the quintessential summer fragrance. And then, if I’m in the mood for something more romantic, Lancôme Idôle EDP it is. And lastly, Miss Dior is my most feminine scent.

How will you be spending your summer staycation?

So, at the end of 2019 my family and I packed up and left Joburg for what was supposed to be a year’s break away from the city. My hubby and I were both feeling depleted and I was personally yearning for a spiritual connection I never had with the big city. We moved back to our home province, the Eastern Cape. We now live in an idyllic little place just outside East London called Cove Rock, where we are nestled between the ocean and the bush. Lockdown happened while we were here and to be honest, it turned out to be the best-timed move ever! We’re all enjoying a slower, nature-rich lifestyle. This summer, we plan on visiting our friends and family in Joburg for a week just to say “hi”, before returning home for a quiet Christmas and New Year surrounded by nature. In fact, we’ve decided to make this our permanent home for the next few years and have big plans of exploring this beautiful part of our country and our childhood memories through adult eyes.

Describe your staycation style?

Barefoot, flowing dresses, clean skin, red lips and sun hats.

What or who inspires your aesthetic?

I love the 20s and 70s when it comes to clothes and style. I don’t dress that way, but I do adopt that general vibe. I like classic tailoring, a good dress and quality fabrics. Simplicity is key, I don’t like to look fussy.

Which factors do you consider when curating your off-duty wardrobe?

My priorities have changed over the years. I now definitely buy fewer clothes less frequently, focusing on quality and comfort. I also try to buy local brands as often as possible – when it comes to clothes, we have so many good ones.

Which accessories will you be incorporating into your wardrobe?

Sun hats! I’m also loving unassuming jewellery these days, so I hope to spoil myself with a gorgeous pendant and maybe some dainty bracelets. I, of course, also have a stash of red lipsticks.

And when it comes to footwear, what are your go-to styles for the season?

Flat, strappy sandals or bright and fun Havaianas.

Which fragrances are you spritzing this summer?

I’ve been off fragrance for months, but I’m slowly getting back to it. I have many favourites. Le Labo Santal 33 makes me feel gorgeous. Le Labo Baie 19 is so perfectly light – excellent for wearing casually every day. Chanel Coromandel Les Exclusifs is a goodie, a real treat. But the one I’ll be wearing this summer is Acqua di Colonia Officina Profumo – it smells like slightly scented water. It’s light, unfussy and perfect for those long, hot days spent outdoors, particularly on the beach.

How will you be spending your summer staycation?

My family and I are heading to the bush these holidays. 2020 has been one challenging year and being away from the city and surrounded by nature is just what we need to rejuvenate and recharge.

Describe your staycation style?

Elegant, comfortable, but still very much on-trend. I love effortless, chic pieces that you can just throw on and go – like kaftans, jumpsuits and billowing dresses.

What or who inspires your aesthetic?

I love Gwyneth Paltrow’s style. She always looks super sophisticated, but in a relaxed, undone way.

Which accessories will you be incorporating into your wardrobe?

Anyone will tell you that sunglasses are my everything. Sometimes they’re the first thing I choose and I build the rest of my look around them. Next is a quality Panama hat – I love that it’s fashionable and functional, protecting me from the sun while still bringing a stylish element to my overall look.

And when it comes to footwear, what are your go-to styles for the season?

Espadrilles and open-toe leather sandals – they are both super comfortable and versatile.

Which factors do you consider when curating your off-duty wardrobe?

Quality fabrics are so important to me and in summer, I gravitate towards cotton, linen and silks to keep me cool and feeling comfortable, especially when the temperature hits its peak.

Which fragrances are you spritzing this summer?

Without a doubt, my signature scent Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540. It lingers on my skin all day and leaves a unique trail wherever I go.
