I'm going to Jazz Fest later this month and it seems kind of fancy, but I've been waiting a long time to see The Internet live and need to be able to dance when they come on stage (and look as cool as Syd). On top of that, it's a day-to-night thing so I need something that suits any weather.

What do I wear?

My understanding is that there are three distinct types of concert you’ll be preparing for: your jazzy sit-down bougie concert, your lively standing dance concert (where The Internet will perform), and the heaving outdoor free concert in the middle of town. Today I will advise you on how to dress for all three simultaneously.

So how do we accommodate for venue-hopping, standing, sitting, singing, dancing, while looking as fancy and fabulous as ever? For men, this can be as simple as the addition of a blazer and brogues. Layer those with a scarf or a light knit, and maybe go for your best pair of sneakers if you’re worried about the effect of all that dancing on your favourite Oxfords.

In the world of women’s fashion, you really can’t go wrong at the moment with flute-sleeved tops, for a look that’s both carefree-casual while remaining dressed up. Pair with an off-shoulder silhouette and tuck into high-waisted black jeans. Don’t make the mistake of wearing heels to your AM-to-PM multi-venue event, after all, you might end up stepping through chairs to dance, through crowds, through grass, clumsily treading on feet. Chunky espadrilles, sturdy, low block heels or sleek sneakers go a long way, literally.

As for layering, once again you’re going to be prepared for all eventualities, whether you’re inside an air-conditioned, seated venue, stepping outside into the wind, or getting messy on the dancefloor. Lightweight knits can be worn tied around the waist, or you might consider the kind of jacket or coat that can comfortably be cloaked over your shoulders. Finish the look with a crossbody leather sling bag that can be doubled up as a clutch, and only take your essentials.

An alternative would be of course to dress in a way inspired by the music genre itself. Just as jazz is lauded for its spontaneity, unpredictability and breaking with conventions, so could you for your sartorial selection. Rock up in a neoprene nighty, knitted armbands and denim fedora.
