Let Superbalist transport you around the world in four easy stays
By Inge Prins and Charl Edwards
Money's tight and time is limited, and not everyone will find themselves in the fortunate position of having their passports stamped this holiday season. Consider this: if you can't make it, fake it with our cheater's guide to summer staycations.
Superbalist's newest drop of apartment furnishings conjure up overseas experiences, reinventing your home as someplace much more exciting than the suburb you actually reside in. Scroll down to discover how you can experience the world from the comfort of your own patio furniture.
Situated in a metropolitan valley rife with rich juxtapositions and where sumptuousness and struggle coexist, you can recreate the strikingly beautiful capital city of Mexico at home by dressing your cool concrete and tiled spaces with must-have Mexican influences, like: splashes of colour; embroidered runners and cushion covers; geometric rugs on the floors and walls; light, bright and almost retro furniture; ample glassware sturdy enough to stand up to wild Margherita-fuelled parties; plenty of servers and platters; folk art; handcrafted accents; and plenty of cacti in terracotta pots.
The fourth largest Moroccan city after Casablanca, Fez and Tangier; the Saharan oasis in the shadows of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains is a heady mix of culture and you can bring in similar design and décor influences, too. Use fragrant, spicy scented candles and incense throughout; incorporate blankets, tapestries, rugs and throws reminiscent of traditional Moroccan wedding blankets; at night light up tealights and other lighting that will throw up shadows on roughly plastered walls; and then bring in an abundance of richly patterned decorative pillows to create soft sitting spaces in your very own Bedouin.
"The Island of Winds" is known for its white-sand beaches, ancient architecture and relentless nightlife – so not too far off from Cape Town then. Recreate the look of a hip Mykonian boutique hotel, sans hairy backpackers and cruise ship pensioners crowding the pool, borrowing the island's whitewashed walls, vividly painted accents and dappled shade of a bougainvillea. This location is party central, and so focus on food, drink and fun, which is best enjoyed around the pool. Then don't forget to stream a mix by your favourite big-name international DJ via a Bluetooth speaker. Just be sure to have enough brightly coloured towels on hand for when you have to extend an invite to your noise-complaining neighbours.
The largest of the Mediterranean's Balearic Islands is famous for its beach resorts, sheltered coves, limestone mountains, historical remains and chic Balearic design style. While Ibiza's nightlife may get all the airtime, Mallorca's thriving design scene and on-trend, island-style is the thing to channel this holiday. Start by focussing on much more considered outdoor spaces. In summer, outdoor living is a must and creating a place of tranquillity should be your starting point when attempting to recreate the look at home. You want the same comforts outdoors that one would typically find inside, resulting in an authentic Mediterranean home and place of relaxation that pays homage to the island's easy-going lifestyle.
