There’s suddenly a chill in the air and the jackets and coats streaming into the Superbalist studio have got us excited for the colder months. Oversized, shearling-lined biker jackets and longline coats with military details are getting us in the mood to layer up.
We chatted to two of the most stylish women we know, Shelley Mokoena and Keneilwe Mothoa of thrifting brand Prime Obsession, to get their take on this season’s shapes, textures, colours and styling tips.Check out their advice on all things jackets below.
"This bomber makes a statement in both its form and bold colour. I wanted to pair it with something simple to create a balanced look."
"Our style is influenced by the beautiful simplicity of minimal design as a whole. We like making reference to architecture and interior design as well, because we love structure, clean lines and volume. Yet in all these elements, everything must still remain as minimal as possible."
"We're passionate about being able to provide clothes that make people feel good about themselves, as well as creating stories and concepts through fashion to tell to the world."
"People should be inspired by and support the young and up-and-coming talent in South Africa. There is so much talent but there is hardly any recognition. There should also be more publications showcasing more local talent. In that way, more people will know about it."
The puffer works for almost every type of look and in this case, we went for sports luxe, and it added that edge because of its bold form.
"We love clothes with long silhouettes, which is why I styled the coat with the long knit. It also adds length and is super easy to wear."
"Fashion was always an interest from a very young age. When we became friends at varsity we realised that we had similar interests, that is why we started Prime Obsession – to carry our passion beyond just dressing fashionably on a daily basis. We wanted to actually make something of it."
"The best style advice we've ever received is to own your style. Clothes can be worn by everyone, but it is how you wear them and how you carry yourself that makes the difference."
"Comfort is definitely key. I styled the parka with loose pants and a slightly elongated knit to create a layered look. This look is comfy and warm and the snakeskin boots add an edge. I also love how the neutral tones complement each other."
"When looking for the perfect jacket or coat, always look for a classic silhouette and high-quality material."
