We’re finally welcoming summer with its long weekends and impromptu getaways.

But as stress-free as these trips can be, packing for them is a feat in itself. With very little time for hours of pondering and debating as to what should stay and what should go - plus limited luggage space - it’s easy to see how you could end up stuffing your suitcase with pieces that might compromise your personal style.

To help you get the most out of a quick trip, we enlisted the help of two fashion experts:

Social Media Manager, fashion enthusiast, beauty fanatic and content creator, Mpho Ntlatleng.

From the clothes that always make the cut to the beauty essentials they rely on to just how many pairs of shoes they’ll be toting; here’s a glimpse into Mpho and Tejamade’s go-to travel bags.

What does your ideal weekend getaway look like?

A weekend in the Winelands is always a good idea. Picnics and strolls in the garden, wine tasting, and endless poolside moments.

Describe your off-duty style?

What could be easier than matching sets and dresses? This season my off-duty style will be effortless pieces that basically style themselves - flowy dresses, linen sets, uniform, and pastel palettes.

What inspires your aesthetic?

My aesthetic is widely shaped by the things I take in and fill my life with. A positive attitude, choosing leisure at any chance I get, beautiful spaces, music, books, and conversations.

Are there any essentials you always pack or that you rely on when away?

A white bikini, a pair of sunglasses that I can wear with every look, a light jacket (just in case) and tons of SPF.

When it comes to accessorising your vacation style, do you take the less is more approach or do you rely on accessories to change up your look?

Less is more. I keep it simple because that’s how I like to live my life - with simplicity and ease, and my style reflects that.

If you love accessorising which key accessories do you take along?

I generally don’t wear accessories and I haven’t for many years - to me a pair of sunglasses and a mini handbag is the best kind of accessory especially on vacation - the more effortless, the better.

And when it comes to footwear, what are your go-to styles for your getaway?

I have to have at least one of each because I tend to be a “just in case” type of packer. The 3-Shoe Rule makes it easier to pick my go-to’s which are: A few pairs of chic flat sandals, a pair of comfortable yet stylish heels (preferably short block heels) and a pair of white sneakers.

Which factors do you consider when curating your weekend outfits?

I love ‘solocations’. A trip alone forces me to have an itinerary set out that allows me to feel safe as I know what I’m doing and how I will keep myself entertained.

Because I know exactly where I’ll be going, that’s where I start when curating my weekend outfits. I spend hours online looking at the location so I can dress accordingly (I love situational dressing).  And of course, the weather.

Quick tip for transitioning your look from day to night?

Just change the shoes! When you’re on holiday, you want the easiest and quickest way to do things - to transition, simply change one item.

And when it comes to your getaway beauty routine, which staples do you always carry with you?

To me, a getaway beauty routine is glowing, hydrated skin and minimal makeup. My staples are a hydrating mask for when I take those long relaxing baths, a dewy foundation, waterproof mascara, body oil, hydrating mist to freshen the skin, and tons of SPF.

Mpho’s Top Packing Tips:

  1. Spend time to look at the different places you’re going to while you’re on your weekend away (that also helps plan your vacation photos) and pack for that space.
  2. Matching sets, flowy dresses are always great because you look put together with half the effort.
  3. Just in case items, like jackets and an extra pair of heels take up space in your suitcase but they really do come in handy. If you think you’ll need it, you probably will.
  4. Don’t forget downtime! We always pack for things we’ll be doing or places we’ll be going to but we forget when we’re just idling or even going to breakfast at the hotel - a loungewear set goes a long way.

What does your ideal summer getaway look like?

Any place that's quiet with beautiful views and help on hand whenever I need it.

Describe your off-duty style?

I love how an oversized shirt and jeans look together.

What inspires your aesthetic?

My style is rather eclectic. I am inspired by things I see in glossy magazines, movies I watch, and a little bit of my environment.

Are there any essentials you always pack or that you rely on when away?

Perfume, sunglasses, sunscreen, makeup bag, my wigs, and my phone.

When it comes to accessorising your vacation style, do you take the less is more approach or do you rely on them to change up your look?

It depends on where I am, who I'm with, and where I plan to go. I like to think of my style as effortlessly chic. I prefer the less is more approach but sometimes I also enjoy a bit of glam.

If you love accessorising which key pieces do you take along?

I almost always will wear my gold bangle, maybe a watch and definitely a ring. A nice bag too. I believe accessories help to elevate a simple look.

And when it comes to footwear, what are your go-to styles for your getaway?

Sneakers, wedges, flats and heels. I like to have options.

Which factors do you consider when curating your weekend outfits?

Weather, where I'm going, and my mood.

Quick tip for transitioning your look from day to night?

A little black dress is easy. You can pair it with a blazer or sweater, flats or sneakers during the day and then switch to heels, red lipstick and some jewellery at night.

When it comes to your beauty routine, which staples do you always carry with you?

Environ hydrating oil capsule, The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Microdermabrasion and Nivea Sun sunscreen.

And fragrance you spritzing?

Beautiful by Estèe Lauder.

Any other tips for packing a stylish weekend away?

I think making a list is key. Once you know where you're going and what you're doing, jot down things you may need. It’s also important to make sure you spend some time on the day of your getaway looking over your list and ensure you have everything you need packed. There's nothing more frustrating than getting to the location and realising you forgot something!
