We're Warming Up With These 7 Micro Trends

A new season means new ways to wear, check out these 7 trends we're working into our looks

Words: Zoya Pon

'Hygge' inspires a decidedly non-mellow vibe within me. I tried to embrace winter with it's layering and comfy-vibes, and a few times I truly did enjoy the melancholic, relaxed and serene tranquility of a rainy day. I must even admit that I'll miss the bright puffer jackets, the fabulous faux fur coats, my fingerless gloves and beanies... But what I won't miss is the winter house-arrest – the forced hygge vibes. I must accept that I'm a warm weather person.

So in the spirit of all things new, fresh and bright, I've rounded up a checklist of micro-trends I'll be updating my new season wardrobe with. Trends that will add that extra bit of heat to your look without much effort or breaking your budget.

This rainbow-reflecting play of light has shown up in a number of accessories from shoes to bags to jewelry… Spot it on your nails and even in your hair (yes iridescent hair is a thing).

Quirky socks

I'm mad over novelty socks right now, and have been stockpiling them all winter so that I can show them off when warm weather permits. Because these babies are just too cool to hide under a pair of pants. Pair them with sneakers (iridescent ones, preferably) and a denim mini (brought back from 2005) or shorts.

Racing stripes, statement wording, badges and black and white checkered print appear on neon and bright primary coloured long-sleeve tops, handbag straps, shoelaces, hoodies, dresses and buttoned up tracksuit pants. Get inspired by Vetements, Gigi Hadid's Tommy Hilifiger collection, Rihanna's Fenty Puma Spring 2018 collection, Versus Versace and Virgil Abloh's Off-White.

The latest in athleisure, you no longer have to actually cycle to wear cycling shorts. These are not for everyone though, and we can thank Yeezy for putting a pair on muse and mother of his children, Kim K, kickstarting the trend. The rest of the JK clan shortly followed, and now the whole world is in the same bike lane. This is the order of things and we love it.

Hot pink, neon yellow and green, and bright orange are your colour palette for the season. The good news is it doesn't have to be head-to-toe and lumo accessories make enough of a statement. A friend of black? These brights pair the best against the stark contrast.

As if you needed any encouragement to rewatch 90s classic Clueless – plaid skirts and pants are back in a big way. And they're perfect in OG yellow.

Belt bag

The fanny pack (sorry, belt bag) is all grown up and comes in leather, bright or printed. I was reluctant to live this life, until I saw the new, structured editions and so why wouldn't you want the comfort of not having to carry a bag, plus the freedom to move more and dance the night away without assaulting people on the dancefloor? It's a yes, yes and yes from me.
