Always coming through to save the look, when you least expect it, knits are an often underrated lifeline to winter style that’s consistently impeccable. While focusing on boots, jackets and coats as key pieces may not be off the mark, they do need a solid supporting act that keeps you effortlessly put together –especially on days where you don’t have time to be too deliberate about your slay. Enter: knitwear, the throw-on-and-go closet heroes that never get the props they deserve.

But there is a gag – as always. For your collection of knits to pull through for you when you need them to, you need to pick the right ones from the start. Comfy sweats that you can wear to lounge on the couch have their place, but this is not it. So, we’ve looked to some street style inspo to help you put together a checklist….

The biggest and boldest colour trend at the moment, not only was every street style star worth their double taps in value seen wearing one, but it got serious runway time in Oscar De La Renta, Tibi and Sally Lapointe’s collections. An easy piece to use for tonal dressing or adding a pop to neutrals, we’re just here to suggest you find your shade of red because this one’s not going away anytime soon.

You probably already own this one and are due for an update. If not: WYD??? The merits of a slouchy key piece are innumerable, but one you’ll appreciate the most is being able to look your best even on days where you’re slightly bloated and would rather be in bed. Contrast this one with a micro skirt and classic Converse kicks or give it a full fashion revamp with wide-leg trousers and boots.

An easy purchase, an even easier statement. Punctuate your look with a bold scarf and tick off both form and function with a something you can clash and mix with outerwear piece that are either just as loud or need to be turned up a notch.
