A fusion of contemporary art and normcore, PUMA’s debut collaboration with artist Shantell Martin is a monochromatic collection that integrates the artist’s trademark illustrations and lettering on the sportswear brand’s classic trainer silhouettes with matching garments. Designed with a minimalist approach, the pieces consist of hidden messages that characterise the individuality of the range, keeping with Martin’s light-hearted disposition as well as her laid-back illustrative aesthetic.
More than authenticating the link between fashion and art, Shantell Martin’s work bridges the gaps between art, the arts and everyday life. A form of expression that has long been deemed elitist and usually inaccessible to regular folk, the art world is still quite detached from the day-to-day experience. Which makes the work of the calibre of artists who create functional pieces that much more pivotal.
Having started out by tagging walls in the inner city of London, whether deliberate or not, Shantell Martin’s trajectory has brought art within a relative reach. Aside from creating her own wearable art in the form of crew necks marked in her trademark themes, she has also collaborated on a collection of sunglasses with Max Mara, made a towel for AmFAR and Lexus’s art car that was shown at one of the New York Fashion Week seasons in 2015.
Coming through with just the right hit of street cred, art value and fashion credentials, this collab is bang on beat for PUMA and you can now shop it on Superbalist.
