Superbalist Stay Outside

The wind’s blowing, the clouds are rolling over. It looks like rain, and all signs point to staying in – but you’ve got a feeling that you should get out there. This seems to be the season when everything happens, and you’re not ready to sit that out for the sake of warmth. Pull your hood up around your ears, push your feet into your boots. You’re taking a walk on a winter’s day, ready to take on the weather and win. Who knows who you’ll meet along the way? Maybe one of the dudes from our latest TVC, Stay Outside...

Superbalist Stay Outside

From Toronto, Canada, Ryan's in the country for two months to build his portfolio and develop his career. He admits to over-packing, and has been known to obsess over his outfits: he can change up to a dozen times before heading out. As an athlete playing basketball and lacrosse, Ryan lives in sweats and joggers all year round and likes to stand out from the rest by pairing these with his military boots.

What’s your favourite Item from the shoot?

These white NMDs that I’m wearing right now. They had us pick out our favourite item and I decided to go with these because they work the best with the rest of my outfits. I also haven’t seen too many of these sweatpants with the cropped cuffs. They’re really cool.

What’s the phrase 'Stay Outside' mean to you?

Athleticwear, and things like that. Active living and not being a couch potato.

How would you describe your personal style?

I like to stay really comfortable, and whenever I get an opportunity to wear comfy clothes I will. Sweats are my go-to.

What’s your tip for transitional dressing?

A lot of my wardrobe is actually geared around the type of outfit that you can switch up and layer. You just need to go with the flow and if the weather’s warm you take a layer off and if it’s colder you add something else on top. It’s good to be prepared.

Strangely enough, despite looking as if he could be from somewhere higher up north and with an accent that’s definitely not South African, Samuel Elakanyani was the only South African model cast for our TVC. He says the accent is from being exposed to a lot of TV growing up and that his exotic look is great, as he’s able to adapt for various different markets.

What’s your favourite Item from the shoot?

I’ve shot with Superbalist three times prior to this, and every time there’s another item that I want. I wore so many different outfits today, so it’s difficult to choose just one, but I think that if pressed it would be the brown suede bomber jacket.

What’s the phrase 'Stay Outside' mean to you?

There’s so much happening out there, and fashion is just one of them. So I suppose this is inviting you to dress up and show off your style. Nobody would want to look this good indoors.

How would you describe your personal style?

To define it you confine it, and ultimately lose meaning. For me it really depends on the occasion, which guides me and what I’ll choose to wear. That said, I try and keep my wardrobe as neutral as possible. That way, I have a lot of pieces to create outfits from. Buy right and wear it forever. Quality is essential.

One item you’ll wear all season long?

Right now it’s a denim jacket that works with formal outfits and can go casual. I layer it up and wear with everything and everywhere.

Superbalist Stay Outside

When the young Dane got the opportunity to visit South Africa he immediately gave up the cold, dark winter for our more temperate clime and has fallen in love with our music and beach sports. Along with his new tan, Simon looks forward to returning to Denmark so that he can show off Babes Wodumo’s ‘Wololo’ and ultimate Frisbee.

What’s your favourite Item from the shoot?

This white shirt: it’s very comfortable and I like the brightness of it, and how it works with these blue sweatpants and the grey shoes. I like how simple it is, because usually I dress in quite a biker style with leather jackets and dark denim.

How would you describe your personal style?

I really like sneakers. Athletic shoe that you can wear with anything. I’m into those and try to be colourful with my shoes. I love bright sneakers.

What’s your tip for transitional dressing?

Always have a rain jacket with you – one that looks really cool though, something that’s sportswear, so that you can wear comfy clothes and then put that over it. I always have a light sweater or windbreaker, something that I can put in a backpack and take with me anywhere.

What’s the phrase 'Stay Outside' mean to you?

I’ll go crazy if I spend too much time inside. I need the fresh air. I need to see things and experience something new every day. See something new. Meet some new people. Add new elements to my life. You can only get all that when you’re outside. You never know what you might experience outside, where inside you can just experience the couch.

Please would you explain that lovely Danish term, 'Hygge'?

It’s when you feel comfortable and you’re under a blanket, watching a Netflix movie, and you have all your things around you. It could be with your girlfriend, on your own, it doesn’t matter, you just feel really good, that’s hygge. The right clothing can help you feel hygge. It’s definitely one of the elements. If you’re on the beach at night, you won’t feel hygge, but if you put on a jacket and you’re around the bonfire then you feel at home.
