Wanna go dancing?

Your day-to-night field guide to festival dressing – SxRTD style

Words: Rosie Goddard | Photography: Travys Owen | Styling: Mandy Nash

When it comes to perfecting the art of weekend festival style, planning your outfit selection is as essential as your choice in campsite. Those five daytime looks may seem like a necessity when you’re leaving the house, but when you’re sweating your way past a bevvy of pulled-together boho babes with a 12kg bag, a camping chair, and cooler box in tow, you’ll realise that back-up jacket no. 1 and back-up jersey no. 3 (as well as those emergency culottes) could have been cut from the packing list. A lightweight backpack of winning combinations? Now that's a bag we can get behind.

Speaking as a serial over packer (and as someone who brought six jerseys to RTD 09), I can say with confidence that handy outfits are your saving grace at festivals like Rocking The Daisies. To minimise time at the campsite (listening to your unsavoury neighbours regale each other with tales of nights gone awry) and maximise time at your favourite stage, The Way of Us’ stylist Mandy Nash came up with some looks that’ll transition seamlessly from your first dip in the dam to your last dance, with only the shortest of pit stops in between. And you can relax, because there’s not a flower crown, war bonnet or pair of furry boots in sight.

MAIN STAGE

Who is she?

Softly spoken, her head is always in the clouds, reflected outwardly in her love for dancefloor swaying. She once enjoyed a disastrous relationship with a member of Beatenberg and is currently studying art, but has a canvas tote bag business on the side.

Natural environment:

Power & the Glory, every Thursday, without fail.

Day-to-night tip:

Straying from a dark colour palette is a no-go, so find a jacket that slots seamlessly into your look. A classic leather jacket adds just the right amount of offhand cool to a pinafore-and-polo-neck combo.

Most likely to be heard saying:

“Did you hear they’re opening a new Yours Truly opposite P&G? We’re NOT going.”

Step away from...

That member of Al Bairre. You’ve done the band guy thing, and we all know how that turned out the first time.

Don’t forget to pack…

A line-up list, so you never miss your favourite acts. Some lace-up boots to add a little grunge to your look, a friend that’ll stop you from making the disastrous lifestyle choice mentioned above.

HIP-HOP STAGE

Who is she?

Not to be confused with her rave-ready twin, this hip-hop loyalist has a serious girl crush on FKA Twigs, and was widely congratulated for her strong selection of memes on the Tiger Tiger relaunch page. Loves sneakers, hates posers, loves to hate festivals, but couldn’t pass up a line-up like this.

Natural environment:

An underground gig in the city.

Day-to-night tip:

This outfit’s almost too good to cover up, but when the chill sets in, throw on a windbreaker (open, of course), and top off your look with a cap. Really cold? Wear some long socks under your wide-leg trousers. No one will ever know they’re there.

Most likely to be heard saying:

“You can like Frank Ocean and Lil Yachty – you don’t have to choose!”

Step away from…

The hip-hop stage. Only for a few minutes – you might find some other artists you like.

Don’t forget to pack…

A power bank for all those Snaps, your new slides, and some pre-prepared captions, because quality one liners take time.

THE BEACH BAR

Who is she?

Last year, her mission involved attempting to merge paisley, crochet, florals, embroidery, fringing and off-the-shoulder silhouettes in a way that wouldn’t scare people. This year, she’s completely content sharing her homemade mushroom biltong (the non-psychedelic kind) and cashew nut yoghurt with the more adventurous of her campmates.

Natural environment:

Nestled somewhere between a floral maxi skirt and a crochet crop top.

Day-to-night tip:

For a subtle(r) take on the boho look, always opt for a soft-to-the-touch cover-up and plush textures, whether that means a shaggy coat for cooler nights or a lightweight suede-style jacket. Embroidery’s a must, but less is always more.

Most likely to be heard saying:

“We totally have to get a crew together for Coachella next year!”

Step away from…

The glitter bindi. Just don’t do it.

Don’t forget to pack…

A lilo, extra crop tops, good vibes that you will then spread around the dancefloor.

THE CAMPSITE STAGE

Who is she?

She came up with her band member best friends. She’s emotionally attached to her camping chair and has an exciting selection of snacks on her at all times. She’ll probably spend Friday night at the campsite hanging with friends, and will leave early Saturday morning to beat the lilo-toting Beach Bar crowds. She may have kissed a member of Al Bairre last night, but it all got a bit hazy after the 7th tequila.

Natural environment:

Her camping chair.

Day-to-night tip:

Keeping comfortable is a no. 1 priority, and while you may love your campsite, you don’t love getting dressed inside a tent. Break up a co-ord with the cosiest of knits and throw on a pair of casual jeans in the same colour palette.

Most likely to be heard saying:

“Did you guys try that mushroom biltong? A girl from the vegan camp next door was handing it out earlier.”

Step away from…

The guy wearing a Bintang Beer tank top that just crushed your tent. Yes, he’s an idiot, but he probably won’t be able to process your anger on account of all the tequilas he just smashed with his m8s at the bar.

Don’t forget to pack…

A straw hat for afternoons in the sun, a soft blanket for late-night chats, emergency snacks (for when your friends eat all of yours).

NU WORLD BEAT CLUB

Who is she?

From the Beach Bar to the Main Stage, she's seen it all, done it all and has now found her spiritual centre and musical home. She’s loved this dance floor for years, and worries that the vibe is being ruined by certain EDM lovers who got lost on the way to their prefered stage. It’s all love though, cos she’s laidback, but she is cooler than you and she’ll let you know it if you stumble into her dancing circle by mistake.

Natural environment:

On the balcony of her favourite city bar.

Day-to-night tip:

Layers are a late night’s best friend. An open shirt and lightweight denim jacket will keep the heat in and keep your look on point as you dance to interpretive instrumentals and the sounds of world music. A scarf can also do wonderfully creative things.

Most likely to be heard saying:

“Guys did anyone see a hoop earring? Think it fell out when I was dancing over here a few minutes ago!”

Step away from...

Anyone trying to touch your hair or ask you where you got your braids from.

Don’t forget to pack…

Extra hoops, coconut oil (“what can’t it do?!”) and super comfortable sneakers for all the dancing.

ELECTRONIC DOME

Who is she?

She used to be into psytrance but will probably deny that now as she’s currently an aspiring AfrikaBurn attendee. She’s been known to frequent other dancefloors depending on where the top visiting DJ from Europe or California is playing. While this is her favourite, she hates that she’s sharing it with boys wearing deep V tank tops and flip flops. Incidentally, most of them happen to be her brother’s friends.

Natural environment:

The speaker, front right.

Day-to-night tip:

The bomber jacket and bum bag pairing never fails. Not only is it practical, it’s comfortable and cool. Plus you can layer a bomber over anything, from a floral dress to denim shorts and dungarees. Wait, why are you wearing that bum bag around your waist? What is this? 2015?

Most likely to be heard saying:

“The grass feels SO good on my face right now”

Step away from…

That ‘for the boys’ hashtag you were about to throw on to the end of your Instagram post. You were about to use it ironically, but people can’t tell the difference.

Don’t forget to pack…

Rave shades, Rehydrate, and bananas – otherwise known as ‘the rave diet’ thanks to their high level of Potassium.
