Metallics are back like they never left. A ‘30s, ‘90s and Y2K beauty and fashion phenomenon, metallics have long walked the fashion hallways as a symbol of flamboyance, glamour and courage by everyday-wear means. 

Spotted on Paco Rabanne, LaQuan Smith and Blumarine runways, metallics are just one of the many ways fashion has reclaimed over-the-top, dressed-to-the-nines styling amidst a pandemic. After leaning towards more relaxed and understated clothing for a few years, the opening fashion sequence of the decade returns to a trend that defined the ‘20s of a different time.

The return of evening wear is an exciting time for those of us who fantasise about show-stopping gowns draping our bodies. Indeed, we have been recently deprived of a chance to captivate and dazzle in jaw-dropping metallics that can be spotted from a kilometre away… but not anymore. Take cues from Jennifer Lawrence’s iconic Oscar 2018 red carpet look by opting for longer gowns that are floor-sweeping for a dramatic effect when attending nighttime events. Alternately, midi hems work just as well for special functions held in the evening. Consider jewel or mermaid shades like emerald green, fuschia pink or rich burgundy for a balance between sophistication and drama. Ground the look in timeless, classic heels in black or matching colours and an equally daring clutch to make the ultimate statement. 

Club Renaissance may be over but metallics for festivals are only at the beginning of their reign. There’s a reason Beyoncé asked attendees to adorn their bodies in metallics: they offer the right amount of playfulness and drama while hinting at a futuristic appeal. Festivals are ideal for daring outfits you wouldn’t otherwise consider for everyday wear. Think head-to-toe metallics and contrast shimmering shirts with impactful corsets (style tip: wear the shirt over the corset and button it down to reveal the corset), and punctuate the look with a bright-coloured bag. Top off the outfit with comfortable slides and be the light in the room wherever you are.

For those of us who believe firmly in moderation, metallic accessories can be incorporated into any daytime or nighttime outfit and give you a desired dose of shimmer and shine. Statement pieces are a great way to dip your toes into metallic waters without over-committing. Jewellery like earrings, rings and bracelets are a practical and fashionable reliable way to play with metallics while gleaming shoes (yes, they can be accessories too) pepper a considerable amount of sparkle without overpowering an outfit. Last but certainly not least, a metallic clutch is the perfect go-to for introducing a wow-effect to subtle looks. Opt for trending sling bags you can take with you on nights out or days when you’re feeling a little extra.
