It’s time to think pink. Barbie is back and better than ever, dominating everything from the big screen to your phone screen. It’s hard to go about your day without seeing pink in some form - and we have the iconic doll to thank.

The beauty of Barbie is that she can be whoever you want her to be. Barbie has lived many lives since she was created in 1959 - she’s been an astronaut, a businesswoman, a scientist, an Olympic skier, and a surfer. She’s fun, she’s stylish, she’s smart, she’s beautiful - she’s everything. She represents boundless possibility, and acts as a vessel for young girls and boys to play out their innermost dreams.

Barbiecore is all about embracing pink. A mood-boosting shade, pink is fun, flirty, feminine, and bold. This is exactly why Abongwe loves it. She says, “The fun attached to the trend. It’s unapologetic in its over-the-topness and that’s what I love.”

Hot pink is the hue most synonymous with Barbie, but any shade will do. Take the trend even further by opting for nostalgic silhouettes that remind you of your younger days, playing with Barbie and creating your magical dreamland.

With the highly anticipated Barbie movie dropping on 22 July, influencer Abongwe Qokela is showing us her take on the Barbiecore aesthetic that has been ruling the fashion world.

glam barbie

Take a page out of glam Barbie’s books and stun in a statement dress in a vibrant fuschia shade. Accessorise with a court heel and baguette bag to introduce a chic shape with a twist on your standard handbag. Bonus points if it’s a different shade of pink to your dress.

sporty

Prefer to be comfortable? Sometimes, Barbie does too. Channel the early noughties in a matching pink sweatsuit with a fitted, cropped cami underneath. Complete the look with a pair of sneakers and you’re ready to get your sweat on.

business barbie

Rule the boardroom in a power suit. Abonqwe love this look the most, saying, “It’s barbiecore but it can live way after the trend dies. Those pants are my favourite.” We love the look of a matching blazer and trousers, completed with stiletto court heels and a shoulder bag that hold everything - from your stationary to your hopes and dreams.

baddie barbie

This one is not for the faint of heart. Channel your inner baddie Barbie with daring cut-outs, short hems, and a plunging neckline. Add even more interest by playing with textures - opt for shimmers paired with faux leather for a hard-meets-soft touch.

street style

This Barbie is ready for anything. Street Style barbie is all about the mix of casual meets formal. Take classic silhouettes like a button-down and a mini skirt, and dress them up in shimmering fabrics. Throw on an overcoat or a gilet to add warmth while not compromising on style.
