Loose-fitting denim, a white tank and a flannel shirt - an unpretentious, everyday look for some and the re-emergence of a revered and timeless style aesthetic for the world of fashion. Matthieu Blazy’s Bottega Veneta’s S/S 2023 collection shared the same air of cool as Marc Jacobs’ career-defining 1993 Perry Ellis display, only devoid of that youthful romanticism that truly captured the essence of ‘90s grunge. Three decades later, grunge amends itself to more polished, considered and chic iterations that constitute Grown-up grunge.
Among various reasons, Gen-Z’s growing fixation with subcultures suggests that fashion will continue to see the return of retro style archetypes, updated with revisions that speak to the current zeitgeist. On the classic-gone-trend, brand director of Depop reports in The Grunge Trend Of Spring Is Full Of Styling Potential: “As brands and consumers are still dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty, and a rapidly growing climate crisis, there’s more of an appetite for the Depop community to be inspired by different eras — but also a notable increase in the demand for a moody, less polished aesthetic with durable clothes and dress-downed looks.”

Grown-up grunge may appear seemingly buffed and varnished by grunge standards, however, the same nonchalance that underlines the pragmatically utilitarian essence of the “ghastly” style remains unaltered. At the helm of the revival of the ‘90s sensation on the runway? Ricardo Tisci’s large employment of the signature Burberry checked pattern paired alongside tailored trousers, cut-outs and deconstructed denim; black, Scottish check and the ripped effect at Junya Watanabe; and an enchanting approach to grunge with exuberant leather, distressed knitwear and feminine touches at Marni.
By virtue of deviating from mainstream culture, grunge is inherently for the people, by the people. Trademarked by denim, prints, flannels and the prolific use of the colour black, this comeback trend brings to light the need for comfort on the edge. Nod to grunge with key pieces that will have your style rocking on this season.

With its elusive and alluring qualities, black is the foundation of any grunge wardrobe. Style sophisticated black blazers with sharp faux leather bottoms and ultra-grunge boots for office-friendly looks. Alternatively, midi dresses paired with boots and powerful top and bottom combinations offer an effective dark elegance. Epitomise glamour in sequined evening dresses and throw on a statement coat for warmth and style.

A hard working grunge wardrobe doesn’t shy away from prints. Established on checked prints emblazoned on bottoms, flannel shirts and jackets, prints add a soft vibrancy to moody outfits. Add a romantic flair to your grunge-inspired outfits with polka dots, stripes as well as abstract and animal prints. Punctuate prints by pairing with solid black shoes, tops, bottoms and jackets.

Although utilitarian at heart, some expressions of grunge explore a slightly more romantic approach to the aesthetic. Think ethereal frills on satin blouses, charming lace tops, voluminous sleeves and floor-sweeping one-pieces. Reboot the romance in your wardrobe with daring sheer bodysuits, lingerie peek-a-boo moments, sweetheart necklines and body-hugging silhouettes in achromatic colour palettes.
