The Y2K fashion wave has taken over the world, with trends such as denim on denim, racer-inspired sunglasses and tie-dye mesh tops reigning supreme. However, another decade that’s had every cool kid in a chokehold is the 80s aesthetic in all its baggy, oversized glory. The star of this era was the oversized blazer. Appearing on recent runways of Gucci, Miu Miu and Balenciaga, the oversized blazer has made its fashionable return in 2023, becoming a go-to, versatile outerwear piece for autumn/winter and beyond.

Its oversized fit allows you to play with proportions and create structured shapes thanks to the voluminous nature of the shoulder treatment. Whether it’s styling to create the illusion of a nipped-in waist or wearing it as a top layer for street style edge, the possibilities are endless.

To get you on the right track, we’ve highlighted some ways to style the hottest item of the season.

Whether you have a 9 to 5 office job or you’re a freelance digital nomad with your workstation wherever the WiFi is, an oversized blazer is an easy way to elevate your daytime look. This doesn’t mean going into traditional smart casual territory per se. But taking everyday pieces such as a graphic t-shirt, straight-cut jeans and sneakers and adding a blazer gives a touch of polish to your look.

Why not bring joy to your closet by adding a blazer in a bold pop of colour? Dopamine dressing continues to dominate fashion trends, with bright pinks, greens, reds and oranges being the go-to hues. Opt for the monochromatic route with matching pants or skirts, or be a bit more daring and pair colours with their complementary besties based on the colour wheel. Think magenta with lime green, scarlet red with turquoise blue, tangerine orange and ultramarine blue.

As the sun goes down and you’re ready to roll up the night, an oversized blazer is such a vibe since it gives a touch of sophistication while allowing you to show a bit more skin. This is the time to pull out a sultry bralette, corset or playful crop top to layer underneath. And if you really want to feel your fantasy, going topless with just a buttoned-up blazer is also an option. Paired with a micro mini skirt, sequin mini dress or faux leather pants with platform or stiletto heels is sure to make you the main character at any party or groove spot.
