Blending the style of yesteryear with new, fresh energy is what Darkie Fiction is all about. And this doesn’t just apply to their music, which pays homage to the nostalgic Kwaito sound of the nineties.

Both Yoza Mnyanda and Katt Daddy’s personal aesthetics – from how they style themselves to how they decorate their home – also reflect this modern vintage look and feel.

Retail Art

This well-dressed couple is known for serving looks that are as impressive as their tunes.

“Our style is quirky and cool, and we consider shopping for clothing as buying retail art,” the couple explains. Their love of fashion even played a role in their relationship.

“Some people go to art galleries, we go to thrift stores,” they say. “We went on so many thrifting dates at the beginning of our relationship. You find out a lot about a person based on the clothes they like.”

For Spring/Summer ‘21, you’ll see them sporting vintage wardrobe staples.

“We’ll be paring our neutrals with tie-dye, which is an essential print for radiating sunny, warm-weather vibes.”

As for individual must-haves, Yoza will be sporting her Birkenstocks, while Katt’s Ray-Ban wayfarers and oversized T-shirts will be making regular appearances. Light, comfortable textures, such as lightweight cotton, will also be featured throughout the season.

At Home KwaDarkie

Becoming parents saw Darkie Fiction undergo a change when it comes to their interior-decorating taste.

“Ever since Bayethe was born we’ve seen our style go from earthy, deep tones to fresher and more youthful with bright colours,” they say.

“This, combined with our eclectic mix of vintage and modern pieces could be described as a pop boho look.”

What hasn’t changed is their creative approach to decor.

“We are experimental when it comes to decorating our home,” the music duo shares.

“We regularly switch things up, or add more plants, to keep things fresh.”

In balmy weather, this family of three enjoy spending time outdoors.

“Our hangout spot in the warmer season is the patio and hammock in the back garden,” they say.

This is when they’re not spending time exploring local markets (courtesy of Bayethe) and basking in the sun on a Joburg rooftop. Their home interior choices are informed by their ideal Spring/Summer getaway - a quintessential Caribbean vacay, complete with palm trees, white sand, and clear blue waters.

Watch the Darkie Fiction love story

For now, they are content to put their feet up and enjoy time on the couch watching their favourite shows with Bayethe.

Just add the smell of braai meat and the sound of a dope local playlist for an evening or afternoon that comes Darkie Fiction-approved.
