Effortless summer dresses, cool tees and easy silhouettes should be accompanied by the trendiest accessories of the season. This summer, as was evident at the Spring/Summer 2020 fashion shows during fashion weeks across the globe, we have a pretty stylish season to look forward to. From jewels and sunglasses to hats and handbags, we’re shining a light on the star accessories that should hold a lead spot in your wardrobe.
It’s time to let go of your trusted oversized straw hat and get your hands on the trendiest topper this season – the bucket hat. Seen on major runways such as Micheal Kors and Fendi, the bucket hat is the perfect lightweight summer accessory. With the ability to inject a touch of tomboy cool, provide a solid form of sun protection and give your summer style a major boost, it’s the head-turning headwear we can't wait to wear on the beach and sidewalks or just while hanging out at home.
Sometimes it’s one piece of statement jewellery that will complete an outfit – and this season it’s the gold-link chain. From oversized and chunky designs to delicate pieces, these accessories reigned supreme on runways. Choose to wear it alone over a plain tee, dress, open-front piece or with another similar-hued treasure – there are no rules when it comes to timeless bling.
One of the most beloved accessories of every season? Sunglasses. And we simply can’t get enough. For the maximalists out there, think oversized retro and round shapes as seen at Max Mara and Kate Spade or how about those interesting geometric frames at Dior and Gucci... not to mention large squares spotted on models at Elie Saab and Prada. For those still lusting after micro shades, take inspiration from the super-slim silhouettes of Proenza Schouler, Valentino and Burberry.
Summer 2020/21 sees humble and dainty hoops get a supersized makeover. Spotted in new XXL proportions, they were paired with everything from power suiting to LBDs. Updated takes on the design include door-knocker styles like those from Balenciaga, as well as double hoops from Proenza Schouler. These hoops are all about standing out, not blending in.
A mega-hit last season, the basket bag is still holding strong as this summer’s go-to arm candy. Appearing in a variety of shapes and designs from oversized beach totes to cute cross-body styles, it’s the bag that partners perfectly with almost everything. Whether it’s wicker, raffia or weave, it adds a certain je ne sais quoi to any outfit, thanks to its sheer charm.
