Kicks for the environment

atsuma

In an effort to reduce their ecological footprint, Nike has landed on the visually alluring and ingenious Atsuma silhouette. It’s a new but retro-looking runner that aims to reassess the creation of cut-and-sew footwear in order to decrease material waste in the shoe’s production. Its silver backdrop is just one piece of the puzzle – one that makes full use of fabric offcuts and turns them into significant parts of the construction, including panelling from the heel wrap to the eye stay and forefoot. Laces blend perfectly with the silver colour palette, leading up to logos on the tongue and a red tab built from a piece of the outsole. Finally, New Balance goes further in its sustainable vision with recycled sock liners housed within the shoe.
