Since his discovery at the hands of legendary producer Black Coffee and the release of his pivotal EP, Liminal Sketches, Langa Mavuso has been propelled to the centre stage of South African soul music. With his penchant for elegant dressing and an unsuspecting voice, you’d be forgiven in thinking that his age is incongruous with his music. At just 25 years old, Langa’s power is in his ability to comfortably marry cultivated RnB and modern Afropop with ease.
Dividing his time between the studio, emails, songwriting, important events and staying fit can be a daunting endeavour, but Langa manages with the help of his intuitive Fossil Gen 4 Explorist HR Smartwatch. We managed to catch up with the musician to talk about how exactly he gets through his very busy schedule.
What does a usual day look like for you?
Usual day? What’s that? None of my days are ever the same except when I’m in hectic ‘studio mode’. I guess the most consistent rituals of my day would be meditation in the morning, checking my emails and socials and finally praying before I go to bed. The rest of the day could be anything from an interview to a shoot or rehearsals and even a quiet day of writing.
In terms of your daily ongoings, how do you manage to stay on top of it all?
I think the best part of the watch's features is that I can look at my schedule, my flights, the weather — those are things I genuinely look at on my phone. I've been trying to get off my phone for a little while now. It's nice for me to be on top of things, in terms of my schedule, without having to constantly be on my phone. I can now see whether something as simple as a Whatsapp needs my attention without having to pick up my phone. I like that kind of functionality where it really allows you to be aware without taking away from your presence on other things.
So which of the features were you most surprised to learn about?
I think the fact that they have Uber and Spotify. But the coolest is fitness. It has fitness suggestions and not only counting what you're doing. It’s waterproof, tracks my heart-rate and I can even customise all my fitness goals on my watch. I think those were the most surprising.
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn't heard it before?
I’d describe it as soothing, soulful and always honest.
And considering how important your music is to you, how do you see the Smartwatch tying in with your work?
I think what the Smartwatch is going to help with the most is staying on top of my schedule. I'm the type of person who forgets where I'm supposed to be sometimes. I like that my reminders are so close to my schedule for the day, and it’s also connected to my google account. Anything that I can put on my google calendar automatically comes onto the watch so it's not even something I need to do manually, it automatically updates. That's what I love about it.
