The Mixtape Vol. 83

Going international with EugenicsSibaca

When a friend of a friend recommends someone for our mixtape series, one of the first things we do is look up their next gig. Siyabonga ‘Eugenics’ Sibaca's next gig was in Dubai, and so we had to find out more...

“I was invited by House of Afrika late last year to come play in Dubai early this year, on the 8th of January and they liked my set...”

Siya was drawn to music early in life as a form of communication; as a socially awkward kid who struggled to talk to people, the music was all he had.

“I used to lock myself in my room and listen to music all day, hoping to learn something new and to create something new with the different sounds I heard. It’s way easier to speak to people with music.”

His year is now split between intermittent House of Afrika gigs at the Media One Hotel in UAE capital Dubai, as well as a new spot at the Pioneer DJ Lab and work in his hometown, Cape Town.

Casual, right?

When he’s home, you can find Siya’s deep house and techno sounds on 5fm and GoodHope, or at music and street culture events like Sneakers Only, the iKasi Experience, TrailBlazer nights or ipotsoyi... Press play on this roundup of what  Siyabonga's listening to right now and get to know him even better after the jump.

Any hidden talents?
I wouldn't say me playing soccer is a hidden talent because I do this on the regular. I just discovered that I'm a good cook though, a very good one and I love it.

Best moments so far?
As far as DJ experiences go they'd have to be both my gigs here in Dubai (not because they are international but the response was amazing) and life in general... finding myself.

What's next for you?
I am working with an international artist, though I can't say in regards to what. I’m also currently planning my 2017, hoping things go the way I pray they should and I would love to venture out more into festivals, specially South African festivals.

Anything else?
It is what it is, it does what it do.
