Some trends are easy to spot – they’re loud and in-your-face right from the beginning of the season, and they’re easy to translate into your own look. Others require a little digging – they’re subtle and steady, rising slowly before becoming the look of the moment. We’ve put together a simple guide on how to buy and style the trends that are about to make it big.
Trend: Art-school cool
Viktor & Rolf sent dresses down the couture runway that fold up into framed paintings – need we say more? Fashion’s love affair with art continues, and this season’s offerings lean toward block patterns with dabs of cubist-inspired texture, moving away from the mondrian-style geometrics we know so well. The trend blends stylish textures with natural hues for a fun take on the boho-chic look.
Key Item: Chunky, no-nonsense boots in a palette you can rock all winter long.
Style it with: Black basics – they’ve always made the best canvas.
Trend: Shadow rose
Sitting comfortably in 2016’s dark romance story, dark florals are the way to go if you’re into the look but dramatic Victorian dresses aren’t really your deal. Featuring supersized prints and dense patterns, this trend is a maximalist’s dream.
Key Item: Bomber jacket in black or navy for around-the-clock versatility.
Style it with: Black, black, and more black for a bold statement, but go easy on the accessories.
Trend: Fresh cut
Suiting goes retro with this season’s tailoring hero: the tuxedo jacket. Style this returning classic with a Victorian-inspired shirt and make it modern by pairing it with a matching jacket and pants. It’s a look you can use as many times as you like by simply changing co-ords.
Key item: A tuxedo jacket with a satin lapel, borrowed from menswear.
Style it with: Chunky, androgynous shoes.
Trend: Moda España
Traditional Spanish details like red florals and lace borders are on the up and up, adding another layer to the dark romance trend. Micro floral prints and a wearable silhouette make this a look you can rock anywhere, anytime.
Key item: A long-sleeved dress with red floral details, easily refreshed by swapping out the accessories.
Style it with: Anything you want – the details make the statement, doing all the work for you.
Trend: Layer it up
This 90s staple look gets a rave-inspired revamp. Combine fun, mismatched details and high necklines with your trusty docs, a pair of platform sneakers, or some chunky sandals.
Key item: The slip dress, worn over everything.
Style it with: Use high-neck tees and polos as layering aids.
