Amit Shimoni believes that modern society celebrates the vacuous, by mistakenly equating a heightened sense of self-awareness – selfishness – as progressive or enlightened. This thinking drove Shimoni to look at the beliefs and motivations of the world’s greatest leaders. He found them to be in direct contrast with an empty, transient culture where self-expression is limited to the latest fashions, and glorification is lauded on the superficial. A question dawned on him: by becoming more focused on self than society, and gains instead of knowledge, had we lost something in the process? HIPSTORY is his attempt to reconcile these two clashing ideas. The collection wishes not to criticise, but to shed new light on the way we think of ourselves and the figures who inspire us.
