(HER)STORY IN THE MAKING

Celebrate Women’s Day with some of Superbalist’s favourite female-owned brands.

On the 9th of August 1956, thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against Pass laws which restricted and surveyed the movements of black women across the country. The famous resistance song which asserts: Wa thint’ Abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo(you strike a woman, you strike a rock) suffused throughout the nation and birthed a fire that would engulf the nation.

Despite attempts to subdue it, that fire burns with the same ferocity as it did 67 years ago; fuelling and enlightening the paths of South Africa’s people and women. Today, the number of brands owned by women continues to rise significantly. Across fashion, beauty, homeware and accessories women are at the helm of people-centred and people-oriented communities. The consequence of this shift is forever gravitational, it invites us to experience what it feels like to engage with products that were made for us by us. This Women’s Day we reflect back on the journeys of those women who came before us and recognise the ones that enhance the quality of our lives today.

In celebration of Women’s Day, we’re spotlighting four women-owned brands on Superbalist that inspire us to look beyond adversity in pursuit of our goals.

Can you share a success story about your brand that you think embodies the spirit of Women's Day?

It's not just one success that matters to me; it's the countless smaller achievements along the way. Every new client, every sale, big or small, has been a building block that led us to where we are today. Witnessing the love for our brand has empowered me as a woman to keep growing Amanda-Jayne and to have confidence in the products we create.

What message do you want to send to other women aspiring to start their own brands on this Women's Day?

Take the leap and listen to your heart, but remember not to rush! It's perfectly fine to take things slowly, grow gradually, seek advice, and celebrate every small success along the way.

How do you think being a female-owned brand affects your perspective and approach to Women's Day?

On a day like Woman's Day, I take pride in representing "Woman" and reflecting on my accomplishments over the past 7 years. The journey hasn't always been smooth, but now I can embrace both the highs and lows, feeling grateful for where I stand today.

Can you share a story of a woman that has greatly influenced or inspired your brand?

Stella Ciolli (SKOON. Founder) greatly inspired the birth of SKOON. In the ever-evolving landscape of the beauty industry, Stella’s journey as an entrepreneur took an unforeseen turn. Starting a skincare brand wasn't part of her grand design, but a seemingly inconspicuous filler story in her local newspaper proved to be the catalyst that ignited a revolution within her. The mere revelation that we expose our faces and bodies to an astounding 515 ingredients daily left an indelible mark on Stella’s consciousness, birthing the extraordinary vision of SKOON.

What role does your brand play in empowering women, both within your team and in your customer base?

When starting the brand in 2010, I never imagined that what I was creating was more than a bag. I was creating jobs, empowering women, helping them to showcase their amazing talents and stepping into a role that meant they could be the breadwinner of their families. Most of the women I employ have either been retrenched or have been jobless for a while. There is nothing better than seeing someone feel seen, supported and enjoying their workplace. The ladies that started with me in a small garage in 2010 are still with me, they are the matriarchs of the business.

Can you share a success story about your brand that you think embodies the spirit of Women's Day?

This would be when we moved from outsourcing our Thandana bags with a third party to manufacturing the bags ourselves. This meant taking control of production and ultimately employing, and upskilling, women from our local community. Those same women are still with our team 12 years later. Not only have they helped grow the business, but they have assisted in training a further +30 female staff members over the years, to better themselves and put food on their family’s table.

Stop talking about it, just do it.  Plan well, dedicate time, surround yourself with like-minded people and most importantly, be authentic.

Can you share a success story about your brand that you think embodies the spirit of Women's Day?

At Standard Beauty, a team of females come together to work together, be it to develop a new product with a specific focus on addressing women's needs and challenges or to assist each other with daily tasks. They recognized that many existing products on the market were not considering certain aspects that were crucial to women's daily lives such as affordability as well as a product that caters to everyone. With determination and passion, we set out to create something unique and impactful.

How do you think being a female-owned brand affects your perspective and approach to Women's Day?

As a female-owned brand, my perspective and approach to Women's Day may be more empathetic, empowering, and focused on celebrating the achievements and challenges of women, both within your brand and in society.

What role does your brand play in empowering women, both within your team and in your customer base?

I ensure my company fosters an inclusive and diverse environment that values the contributions of all team members, regardless of race. My company is also a women-owned and all women-ran - this involves creating policies and practices that promote women.
