Pride Month: A Rainbow of TikTok Creators

Celebrated throughout June, International Pride Month is when the LGBTQAI+ community across the globe come together to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. The pivotal protest happened on 28 June 1969 following the constant police raids of gay bars, including the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City. Patrons of the bar ended up fighting back, with queer rights pioneers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera being on the frontlines of the riots.

The following year the first Pride march was held and kick-started the queer liberation movement that spread across the globe, championing equal human rights for queer people.

This year has been an especially tough year for the queer community, with many anti-LGBQTIA+ bills being lobbied in the USA targeting drag performers and trans people, along with the recent passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda, where it is illegal to identify as an LGBTQAI+ person in the African nation. The fight is far from over. However, this doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom.

Queer representation is at an all-time high in media, and Gen Z is also being more open about being part of queer community progress is being made.

TikTok has been a haven for many in the queer community. The video-sharing app, like many other social media platforms, have allowed users to share story times about dating, queer rights information, along with other topics in the LGBTQIA+ community to millions of people.

This includes local creators who've gained large audiences on TikTok while being openly queer.

We spoke to Banele Ndaba aka Moghelingz (he/him) and Luyanda Ngalonkulu (she/her) to find out their views on Pride Month, how to get the right Pride outfit, a look into their style and how TikTok has aided in achieving a sense of community.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride Month means that I get to celebrate and appreciate who I am. It gives me the confidence to take pride in my being and allows me to connect with other queer people.

Where does your personal style come from?

It comes from years of figuring out who I am, what I like and how I identify myself to the world. It stems from comfort and freedom, being able to do and be what I truly am without judgement, especially from myself.

How would you describe the perfect outfit for a Pride event?

An outfit that speaks to you as a Pride baby. It’s not always about the glitter and the colours, and it is what feels authentic to you. Whatever that may be. And obviously with a touch of prideful colours.

What type of pieces do you gravitate towards when attending Pride events/queer safe spaces?

Anything that makes me feel seen and comfortable for me. I am big on authenticity, so anything that feels true to me.

Why do you think self-expression through clothing is essential?

Clothes speak towards your individuality. They’re a way of self-expression. There’s a saying, “If you look good? You feel good”. That is an indicator of a confidence boost. If you feel good in what you wear, you carry yourself with high regard.

How has queer visibility on TikTok impacted how you approach content creation and building a community with other LGTBQIA+ individuals?

It has made TikTok a safe space for me as a queer person to be able to share parts of myself I shouldn’t have to hide or feel small about identifying with. I don’t feel that my content will or can be received badly as a result of this. It has also enabled me to stay true to my queerness, as I don’t have to worry about being accepted.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride Month is a significant period when we recognise and celebrate queer bodies all over the world. It means taking over spaces that don’t have queer representation and educating people about our community. However, most importantly, showing love, care and support to one another.

Where does your personal style come from?

It comes from being comfortable with myself and my sexuality. As a versatile creative, I like incorporating my feminine and masculine energies together.

How would you describe the perfect outfit for a Pride event?

An outfit that represents who you are before you even introduce yourself. Imagine a long-sleeved bodycon dress filled with crystals all over. Now that’s a statement!

What type of pieces do you gravitate towards when attending Pride events/queer safe spaces?

When attending Pride events, I gravitate towards shoes. I know it’s weird, but the type of shoes you wear determines what kind of a vibe you’re looking forward to having at an event, like how wearing sneakers means you just want to dance and be comfortable.

Why do you think self-expression through clothing is essential?

Fashion plays a huge role in how one sees themselves, so existing in an era where fashion is celebrated, it's important to tell your story through clothing.

How has queer visibility on TikTok impacted how you approach content creation and building a community with other LGTBQIA+ individuals?

It has honestly challenged my confidence a lot but, most importantly, helped me connect and reflect on myself a lot more. Finding the same set of community members on the platform made me want to continue venturing into spaces that don't have a lot of representation of the queer community.
