Move over gorpcore - the fashion world just can’t get enough of cowboy core. The Western americana-inspired aesthetic is having a moment, with double denim, cowboy boots, prairie dresses, and fringe detailing acting as go-to sartorial styles for fashion’s newest It girls.

In isolation, these pieces can feel dated or costume-like so styling is key to making it work for 2023. Bring a modern finish by balancing a touch of Western with more current silhouettes to ground the look.

Here’s a guide to help you pull off key cowboy-inspired pieces:

Double denim is having a renaissance. But forget Britney and Justin - we’re going full-on Canadian tuxedo. Volume is key to modernise this look. Look for denim with some kind of detail like cargo pockets, a frayed hem, or ripped cut-outs to add that rustic, ranch feel. Pair with a cropped denim jacket worn fully buttoned-up as a shirt, or with an oversized denim shirt worn open over a classic white tee. To warm things up, layer over a denim jacket with sherpa detailing.

Cowboy boots are the must-have boots of the season. These may seem like a fleeting trend, but this silhouette has stuck around for the past two seasons and fashion’s biggest It girls keep bringing them back. Keep it simple with a classic black or brown pair, or add some glam by opting for a gold or silver pair that makes a big fashion statement. Edge up your favourite flouncy dress or midi skirt by pairing them with cowboy boots for an instant hard-meets-soft juxtaposition. Or keep it casual by styling your boots tucked into baggy jeans so that they slightly billow at the calf and create a unique silhouette.

Fringe detailing can go one of two ways: 1920s flapper or americana Western. Stick with the latter by opting for fringe detailing in textured fabrics like suedes, leather, and rope. We’re not going full fringe here. This season’s fringe is more considered - it’s an unexpected fringe adorning the edge of a modern shoulder bag, a slight tassle on a boot, or the hem of a knitted jersey.
