Google the words “Instagram travel article” and you’ll encounter multiple stories lamenting how the popular photo and video-sharing network, along with selfie culture, is ruining holiday experiences. We respectfully disagree, since Instagram happens to be where so many of us stumble upon a whole lot of creative inspiration and fresh #lifegoals, especially come holiday destination time. Take the stylish Gina Mwoombola aka Gina Jeanz, for example – the Cape Town-based DJ, producer and popular South African Instagrammer whose social media profile is as breathtaking as the locations she frequently visits. Her Instagram profile is a visual feast filled with expertly styled shots, candid moments and snapshots of exotic landscapes. We caught up with Gina to find out more about her recent trip to Europe and her top travel tips to get us ready for our next dream holiday destination.

Where did you most recently go on holiday?

I went to Europe during their summer and spent most of my time in Spain, Germany and Switzerland.

What was your favourite thing about the trip?

Visiting different countries and experiencing all kinds of customs and traditions, especially the food. It was my first time in Switzerland and I absolutely loved the landscapes.

When you’re about to travel, what tips can you share when it comes to packing?

If you’re going for longer than two weeks, don’t overpack, because you’ll end up going shopping. I pack one pair of sneakers for all the walking, a great pair of jeans and at least five shirts. You don’t need many pairs of trousers – that’s what makes your luggage heavy. I weigh my bags before a trip and my cutoff is 12kgs. It seems like very little, but I can add to it as I shop without fear of being over the limit. It’s a breeze afterwards. If you’re questioning whether you need the item, just leave it behind.

What’s the one thing you never travel without?

A mini first-aid kit, especially in foreign countries where I don’t speak the language. I like to know I’m prepared in case I get the flu or have a reaction to food. A multivitamin, painkillers and the works may seem like overkill, but rather be prepared. It’s the best thing you can do for yourself.

Where is your next dream holiday?

I have so many on my list. I’d love to visit Hawaii and to see the Northern Lights, as well as my husband’s home country, Senegal. I watch a lot of National Geographic so I’m always getting inspiration for travel destinations.

What is the strangest meal you’ve ever eaten while travelling?

I once ate frog legs in China. You know how everyone always says, “It tastes just like chicken.” They do, but I haven't tried them since.

What is your ultimate holiday outfit?

I’m a get-up-and-go kind of girl, so the less fuss, the better. I’m into practical clothing, so I take breathable linens, a cool shirt and trousers. I also like to add a boilersuit and vibrant skirt, but I always check the weather in advance. That’s what determines the kind of clothes I pack.
