There’s arguably a small number of ways denim clothing could be reinvented. Jeans, thanks to a rich track record, work in any wardrobe regardless of one’s personal style or size. Technical innovation as radical as, say, elastane in denim, is a rare thing – even in premium jeans. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” seems to be the thinking here. The usual ingredients such as front pockets, dye, rivets and cotton have remained largely unchanged for over 100 years. Perhaps the secret sauce partly lies in the timeless appeal of workwear? Not to be confused with office attire, workwear refers to clothing often associated with manual labour. It evokes a sense of practicality and durability, which are hard qualities to beat in clothing. We only have to look to local denim brand Sergeant Pepper Clothing Company for proof of its influence.

Exhibit A: THE CENTURA HYBRID JACKET

We argue that utility in fashion will always exist to combat the sometimes frivolous nature of trends. Case in point: S.P.C.C’s Centura Hybrid Jacket. Crafted from quality cracker poplin and finished with a unique garment wash, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s made from faded denim on first glance. Dedicated to fit and function, the jacket takes to workwear with neat removable performance straps within and an industrial brand print on the back.

Exhibit B: THE ALAMEDA DENIM JACKET

Each season, S.P.C.C explores denim through interesting details and finishes. A few of their signature pieces include jeans, premium tees, sweats and jackets. Evidently, the Alameda Denim Jacket’s been crafted from premium quality indigo and rigid denim with a black over-dye, harking back to denim’s heyday as the go-to for hardworking men. The jacket is finished off with a heavy zip detail on its front pocket, accentuated with frayed trimming.
