Our round up of the most iconic 90s movies looks (plus how to shop them on Superbalist)
By Zoya Pon
Fashion is cyclical, and while recent eras have all had their re-imagining, it's time for the early 90s to have a go. What better way to revisit classic trends of the time than by reviewing our favourite looks from nine iconic movies? From Tupac Shakur's streetwear in Juice, to Liv Tyler's punk boots in Empire Records, and who could forget Leo in Romeo and Juliette and his lovesick beach-bum style? The era of Tamagotchis, slinkies and butterfly clips will forever be a fashion fave. How will you choose to reimagine it?
Here's our round up (plus how to snatch all the looks with the latest 90s inspired fashion from Superbalist).
An obvious contender. The plaid, the crop tops, the micro-bags, the hats, the pom pom pens...
Instead of the preppier leading lady Cher (Alicia Silverstone), we're spotlighting the more daring Dionne (Stacey Dash) for her equally iconic nose ring, braids, headband, velvet dress and white collared shirt combo.
OPTIONAL: knee high white socks .
Romeo and Juliette
Baz Luhrmann's reimagining of the Shakespeare classic will forever be shrined in iconic film fashion history. We're falling in love all over again with Leo's Venice Beach-inspired style; think floppy haircuts, loosely buttoned and flowing shirts, rolled up pants and chains. Statement white socks if you dare.
OPTIONAL: Speaking Old English.
She's All That
Popular guy (played by 90s heart-throb Freddie Prinze Jr.) makes bet to transform nerdy Laney Boggs (come on, it's Rachael Leigh Cook!) into a prom queen and falls in love with her instead. Could it have had something to do with that red dress? One thing's for sure, it definitely helped; proving the power of a little red dress and that there's a Laney Boggs in all of us, waiting to shine.
What some call the 'film of a generation', others call an unrealistic portrayal of a working environment. Even though torrents killed the record store and Empire Records tanked at the box office, the movie (and Liv Tyler's outfit) became a cult classic for alienated, angsty teens all over the world.
OPTIONAL: The official soundtrack featuring Better Than Ezra, Cracker, the Cranberries, Evan Dando, the Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket and more...
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Featuring perhaps the most famous bucket hat in movie history, although this isn't about the hat itself, Depp's Raoul Duke displays multiple trends emulated in our present wardrobes. That's oversized jackets, tinted aviator sunglasses, long socks, white Converse sneakers and button up printed shirts. It's the ultimate ugly on purpose style inspo for those of us that are "Too weird to live, too rare to die!"
OPTIONAL: brown leather duffel bag.
Clueless' edgier, older sister, this teenage witch film boasted rockstar style with the attitude to match. The all black PVC, chokers, tartan and lace-up boots are a twisted goth/Catholic schoolgirl combination made in fashion heaven. Nancy's fearless dark red lips, choker, plaid skirt and white long sleeve shirt is a definite #mood.
OPTIONAL: Ironic rosary.
This cult classic was denim heaven, but Tupac Shakur's Bishop (besides saying the now famous "Yeah I'm crazy, but you know what? I don't give a f**k") rocked this fabric best with his denim jacket, hoodie and lace up boots combo. It's an outfit that looks great on everyone, however you choose to do it.
OPTIONAL: Gold chain.
Straddling the 2000s, it arguably set the tone for many an overly shiny, overly tight outfit. Pre-Mean Girls this dark comedy served a lot of lewks, and it's hard to choose just one, so we're going with all three. From the check prints, colour-blocking, mini handbags and tight skirts, its a yes from us.
OPTIONAL: Bad attitude.
Here's something for the rebel in all of us, which serves as a 90s grunge style visual reference. Think bleach blond hair, polo neck sweaters, checked shirts around the waist and faded denim. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and co's outfits popularized the 'heroin chic' fashion trend that was rife throughout the 90s.
OPTIONAL: Shaved head.
