Cosy up in this season’s stylish batch of must-have jerseys
It might be primetime for hoodies and sweatshirts but in the dead of winter, nothing beats classic knitwear. From cable-knits and ugly Christmas-esque sweaters to polo necks and preppy V-neck pullovers, this season’s designs come in an abundance of styles, levels of bulkiness, an array of colours and most importantly, they’re available at every price point. While we still recommend not parting completely from your sweats of choice, you won’t be making a mistake by cosying up in one of these woollen wonders either.
Block your colours
Go back to your days of play dates and afternoon cartoons with a colour blocked sweater. It’s an easy way to brighten up your look — and this winter, you owe it to the world to wear as many colours as stylishly possible. Get the full 90s aesthetic with a striped number in a slightly oversized fit, so buy one (or two if necessary) sizes up. It’ll make layering underneath easier too.
Zip it up (only a quarter of the way)
Ideal for the corporate man who loves his collared shirts and ties, the ¼ zip pullover will add a casual, functional aspect to your work outfit. The round collar isn’t fussy, plus you’re free to wear the zip whichever way you please (or depending on the temperature) without worrying about looking sloppy. Wear it with dark jeans and double monk-strap shoes and if necessary, throw on your favourite peacoat, too.
Try the granddad look
Whether you’re deliberately going for the thrifted look or just want something to wear during your weekend-long Netflix-and-chill missions, a knit with a slouchy fit is one timeless way to go about. It’s warm enough to wear on its own and stylish enough to layer under your favourite outerwear, so the only thing you need to worry about is how deep you plan to go with your binge-watching.
Nice + chunky
A lightweight pullover won’t make surviving winter easier and generally, when it comes to knits, the more plush the fabric the better. Think heavy cotton, wool and cashmere. If you’re a flashy dresser, make it all about the texture. Invest in a standout design and maintain it by occasionally brushing it — it’ll prevent any pilling and help your jersey age gracefully.
Go on a roll
Last season’s surprise comeback kid is still around. The polo neck (or roll neck or turtleneck) is another smart must-have. With a touch of British mod aesthetic, it can replace your shirt and tie when worn with a suit, or use it to smarten up your casual jeans and boots combo, just wear a puffer over it. Black is a colour you can wear on any occasion, but if you want something to add contrast try emerald green or grey.
