Back in 1967, JanSport started hand-making backpacks on the second floor of an old transmission shop in Seattle. Requiring backpacks that would stand up to the founders' outdoor adventures, Murray designed the packs, Jan did the sewing and Skip starting selling the backpacks to other outdoor enthusiasts. When Murray asked Jan to marry him, he said he'd name the company after her if she said 'yes'. She did. And JanSport was born.

Having initially started the company with the mission to sell enough backpacks to avoid getting real jobs, the JanSport founders realised that they were essentially responsible for their customers' most important personal items, and their mission became to produce the most durable and dependable backpack in a variety of silhouettes and diversity of colours and prints so as to allow their customer to self-express through their JanSport backpack of choice.

Having designed a better backpack that was truly innovative, and then built a company around it, now, some 50 years later, the journey and the adventure is still what drives the brand and everything that JanSport does.
