"Him play tune like him ah fling big Coppashots"
Coppashot is a Johannesburg-based Reggae, Dancehall and hip-hop DJ that got into the game some years ago through a love of music and sharing his favourite sounds with others.
Over the years he's diversified his style even further and has started incorporating Lounge, Bossa Nova, Latino, Samba and Afro Beat into his DJ sets. As a great collector of music, the selekta often feels the need to play genres beyond the reggae sphere, resulting in his growing his audience and collaborations with other artists he'd dreamed of playing alongside. Read our short Q&A interview after the jump.
How did you come up with the name Coppashot?
In Jamaican patois/slang "coppashot" is a bullet. So i remember seeing a comment on facebook related to one of the sets played years Ago saying "Him play tune like him ah fling big Coppashots". I liked the tone of that and i adopted the name Coppashot.
Have you had any other aliases/nicknames over the years?
I kinda went with the name 2Shotz for a while until I up-scaled to the heavy machine people get to vybe with lately that is Coppashot :-)
What have been some of your most memorable gigs and why?
For me the most memorable events I've played were:
Spring Fiesta from 2013 - 2015 With Admiral and Appleseed,
Back To The City 2014 - Present (also on the 2018 lineup),
Face The Music with AKA in Soweto,
Basha Uhuru 2017
Residency at Great Dane in Braamfontein
These above mentioned events are special to me as i was given a platform on all these large stages to represent and showcase Reggae and Dancehall.
Playing alongside some the Jamaican artists that came on tour to South Africa like Lutan Fire, Capleton, Anthony B, Luciano.
I also host an event series called Rub-A-Dub which happens every last friday of the month at Shikisha Umzimba which focuses on old school reggae/dancehall and hiphop with a vast array of guest Dj's every month
What's in the mix you made for The Way of Us?
On this mix I've cooked up an eclectic mix of Lounge, R&B and Soul, Hip-hop and Bossanova/latino/samba. This mix is close to my heart as it has been a while since i made a mix and i didn't think it would turn out to be this great. It’s a journey through music
