Now that your workwear rotation for the year is sorted and you’ve nailed looking and smelling great for Valentine’s Day, it’s time to relax. Combine your favourite casual clothes with these six standout menswear items and you’ll unlock a new level of casual. It’s dressing down, but to the nines. Perfectly styled, but not trying too hard. Here’s how to elevate your laidback looks.
The bomber jacket 2.0
We never miss a chance to stunt in a standout bomber, and neither should you. Complement a pared-back look with a quilted jacket in a pastel tone, or channel Brad Pitt in Fight Club by covering up a floral shirt with a bomber in a plush texture like suede.
Fresher dad sneakers
2017 was the year of the dad shoes. In 2018, they’re looking a little smarter, some are getting a bit chunkier, but still in line with their throwback aesthetic. Complete the look by either showing some ankle or opting for patterned socks. For the former, roll up your pants with an extra wide cuff — a great way to show off the quality of your denim.
Accessible accessories
Men-on-the-move need the perfect finishing touches to their looks. A Yankees cap says “city slick” while covering up bedheads, while a backpack keeps things practical. Look for pops of colour (orange is the new street style fave, so invest in small, loud pieces like this baseball cap) and functional carry-ons that have space for all the essentials.
Get on track with sweats
If you’re all about that cosy life (good call, by the way), make sure your essentials are in top form. Go with the brands you know and trust, and look for timeless pieces you can throw on all-year round. A tricolour tracksuit top is a winner, especially when the temperature gets unpredictable. For something that’s more leisure than athletic, sweatshirts are still in. This season’s fit is slightly oversized with drop shoulders.
Make it all about the tee
Give your button-up a break, man. You’ve both earned it. Instead, opt for something classically casual — the essential T-shirt. Whether you’re into stripes or something graphic, make sure you tuck it in. Wear it with cuffed or cropped bottoms and low-top sneakers.
