Has there ever been a more exciting season for footwear? From Balenciaga’s ‘pantoshoe’, to the return of the kitten heel and textured boots celebrating Bowie-esque attitude, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to scene-stealing silhouettes.
We asked event producer, blogger (and Instagram aficionado) Cassandra Twala to model some of this season’s most coveted pairs. We then chatted to her about her style inspiration and, of course, her love for shoes.
The ankle boot
The ankle boots in this look are the 'finishing touch' rather than the focus. I like that they don't match everything else.
Complete these sentences. In terms of shoes, every wardrobe should include a:
Victoria Beckham – a classic versatile black shoe.
Solange – fun dancing shoes, that give you life.
Beyoncé – heels that make you feel like you have already won.
The heel
The heels are a statement piece so I wanted to quieten the clothes and let the shoes take centre stage.
Who should SA be looking to for fashion inspiration?
Yasmin Furmie – elegant, edgy, genuine.
My friend Lulama Wolf – an unassuming mix of classic and contemporary.
Boogy Maboi – she makes unconventional look so easy.
The printed boot
Snakeskin detail on shoes and accessories is all the heat for me right now. I particularly liked the pointy toe, paired with these shiny pants and this off-the-shoulder knit.
When did you start becoming interested in fashion?
I've always been interested in fashion, ever since I could dress myself. But my interest in personal style really started mid-varsity when I started to think about why I wore what I wore.
Who or what influences your style?
It's a combination of a lot of things. My design background, the RIGHT places on the internet and self-awareness.
The flats
These flats are a fun, over-the-top 'party trick' that instantly make you feel like dancing. I paired them with black because they deserve to shine!
The best style advice you've ever heard:
Taste and style are about being genuine. I think Rich Mnisi said it at his 'Taste Chronicles’ dinner.
What trend will you be bringing back this year?
Statement skirts. I'm obsessed with them right now. Textures, volume, layers, pleats – the possibilities are endless.
The over-the-knee boot
A big part of styling is working with proportions and making your 'good' features even better. I think the length of these boots paired with a really short skirt, makes my legs look way longer than they are. I'm always down for that! The white jersey has great volume around the sleeve and hugs my body beautifully.
What do you look for in the perfect winter shoe?
It should have longevity and be super versatile. Mine would be a black leather, block heel.
