The Mixtape Vol. 89

With an EP on German label, Ching Zeng, RVWR has had a great year and is looking to make the new year even better

A personal bereavement resulted in a year hiatus, however, 25-year-old RVWR is now back in the game and is scoring chart and critical success and support both in South Africa and around the world.

Pronounced RAWR, RVWR’s 3-track EP Cupcake is the 30th release on Ching Zeng and is a hybrid of afrobeat, grime and trap.

His remix of EJ Von Lyrik X Benbo’s ‘Keep It Funky’ has just been released on the UK-based Pink Lizard Music and has already been supported by Ready D on Good Hope, DJ Fresh on 5FM and hip-hop legend Chuck D on his radio show in the USA.

RVWR has also just hit the top of the South African charts with his production for the track ‘All Hail’. Recorded by Khuli Chana as part of his latest EP, it features Cassper Nyovest and went Top 10 as an individual download and number 1 as part of the EP on iTunes on its release.

There are also 3 tracks on the critically acclaimed album Das Kapital Presents Overtime, which was released in the first week of September 2016.

A resident at monthly night Overtime, RVWR’s bass-heavy DJ sets match his productions with a brilliantly unique take on everything from trap to hip-hop, grime, and UK house. We spoke to the DJ about his year so far and what the future holds. Read our interview with him after the jump.

You just released an EP titled Cupcake – what's the story behind the name and what's the sound you're pushing here?

I was eating a really delicious cupcake when I was writing the title track and I just went with it! The sound I am trying to push is not really genre specific but slightly more leftfield take on the beat and bass sound I have done up to now.

Tell us about the label you've released through, Ching Zeng.

This is my first release with Ching Zeng and they’re Germany's premiere hip-hop, beats and bass label. They release DJ Rafik (6 times World DJ Champion), Eskei 83, DJ Mos – it is very much a part of DJ culture in spirit and very open minded. A great bunch and not just because they released my music! Hopefully I will get to meet them in the next year. I love the sound they are pushing and would love to release more music through them in the future.

You've been supported by everyone from Fresh to Ready D to Chuck D. What does this support mean for you as an artist?

The local and international support feels great! To have a legend like Chuck D play music you are involved in is crazy, and then to have Ready D and 5FM all behind what you do is quite humbling really. It’s also great that what I think are more leftfield sounds are actually being picked up on and played to a wide audience. It motivates me to keep doing what I do as the love that people are showing on those tracks is so much appreciated. Thank you!

Talk to us about working with artists like EJ Von Lyrik, Cassper Nyovest and Khuli Chana.

It is awesome to have them on my productions. The EJ Remix I had to push out real fast – pretty much inside 48 hours over a weekend – and I am so glad that it came out the way it did. It was great to work with Khuli as well. When we got the vocal mix back we had the great surprise that Cassper was on it as well! The way the social media reacted to ‘All Hail’ was great to experience.

Help us with our summer playlists, how can we be better iPod DJs when entertaining at home?

For a smooth mix try and keep them all with in a similar range of bpm and try to stick to a similar sound. If you want to mix it up then try and build up the tempos and try not to chop and change too much as it can throw things off. Don’t forget to turn on auto fade, you don’t want that few seconds of silence if people are dancing! Make sure you programme in some RVWR tracks, as well as Murder He Wrote, DJ Karaoke, DJ Rafik etc. to name just a few.

What's in the pipeline for 2017?

I have written another two EPs which are currently with labels. I am sure there will be another Do Work release to come plus more collaborations with other artists to follow up on my recent releases. Hopefully ‘Keep It Funky’ will continue to build and crossover and then there is still the ‘All Hail’ full single release too. Plus there should be more DJ gigs across South Africa this coming year as well.
