When it comes to exercise equipment, the most valuable piece of gear might be right in your back pocket - your cellphone. There are many fitness Apps devoted to all kinds of workouts, from yoga, HIIT, strength training, running, etc. However, for a beginner, this can be quite overwhelming. Fitness instructor Mika Stefano has rounded up five workout Apps, no matter your fitness level.

Best for beginners: Nike Training App

What does it do: I love the Nike App because it is free and has so many workouts to choose from. It has workouts for first-timers to athletes who want a challenge. Each workout includes a video, so you can watch the exercises before training.

Compatibility: ios and Android

Costs: free

Pros: The App gives you access to guests who share their workouts with you. The biggest pro would have to be the videos that show each exercise.

Cons: I can’t think of any cons.

What other extras does it come with: A great addition for runners is that they can access guided runs on the app.

Best for runners: Strava

What does it do: A friend of mine introduced me to Strava. This App tracks your runs and cycles. For runners, it tells you your splits per km. That way you can see your fastest and slowest splits. It also tells you where you peaked, your heart rate, and the elevation of your run.

Compatibility: ios and Android

Pros: The ability to track everything from KMS, heart rate, calories as well as elevation of runs.

Cons: It also acts like a social media platform where you can view other people's runs and give them kudos on good runs. This may be a con if you don’t want people to see all your runs.

Best for short workouts: HIIT Workouts

What does it do: This App has a collection of short workouts that caters to all fitness levels. You can select short workouts or intense sessions. The length of the training also varies from 10 minutes, 15 minutes or longer.

Compatibility: ios or Android

Pros: Workouts are free and easy to follow.

Cons: Sometimes the how-to videos take a while to load. Additionally, It would be beneficial for trainers if they also listed modifications on all exercises.

Best for fitness workout plans: WOD Generator

What does it do: I discovered a cool App called WOD Generator. You tell it what equipment you have and it will create a workout for you. There are workouts for every piece of equipment one could have as well as bodyweight workouts.

Compatibility: ios or Android

Pros: It uses different HIIT styles of training. So Tabata, AMRAP, and EMOM styles. You can track each round and see how you did at the end of the workout. It always changes, so you will have various workouts for your training sessions. It has a sister app called WOD Timer and you can simply create your exercises, but you follow the timer to keep track. This Timer App has Tabata, EMOM, Amrap and For time settings.

Cons: It doesn’t offer modifications to certain exercises. So you may need to open a second window to Google modifications for your exercises.

Final rating: 4/5 I like this App and use the timer section almost every day.

Best for keeping calm/yoga: AloMoves

What does it do: AloMoves is not just an App for yoga workouts, but also includes pilates, barre, HIIT workouts as well as meditations.

Compatibility: ios or android

Pros: Users get access to some of the best fitness professionals in the world. There are amazing tutorials catered to all fitness levels.

Cons: There’s a monthly subscription

App additions: Tutorials and educational series teaching more advanced poses on yoga.

Fitness Apps are a great addition to your fitness journey, especially as a beginner. As long as you have a good internet connection, you have no excuses for keeping fit and healthy.
