When it comes to South African designers who are flying the country’s flag high, Thebe Magugu is undoubtedly among the best. Hailing from a small township outside Kimberley, this dynamic and talented designer not only beat the unlikely odds of becoming a household name in local fashion but also went on to become the first designer from Africa to win one of the most prestigious prizes in fashion – the LVMH, which was created to honour and support young fashion designers around the world.
Now that the fashion creator’s eponymous label is recognised internationally he has become the go-to designer for many of the entertainment industry’s greatest stylists. His designs feature in the hit HBO series, Insecure, as well as Beyoncé's Black is King. While Magugu’s work has done remarkably well abroad, it’s clear to see that he is still very much connected to the South African customer. And his latest collaboration with Castle Lite’s fashion wing, CLD, is testament to that.
Castle Lite is teaming up with Magugu’s younger and hip sister brand, Extracurricular to create an ingenious partnership that is aimed at the urban nomad. Dubbed the Castle Lite Drop, this limited-edition capsule collection perfectly combines Magugu’s African futuristic aesthetic and Castle Lite’s innovative spirit and pop culture status.
Aimed at the urban nomad, the range itself consists of luxe laid-back staples – think shirts, sweatpants and hoodies – and accessories with interesting designer touches such as cool motifs, quirky doodles and unique details. Perfect for the city dweller always on the move, these fresh pieces offer the wearer plenty to room to play and style up looks that express who they are.
