Dr Jules has the medicine for your NYE warmup
Julian Brache lives in Athlone and has been a DJ for over two decades, playing everything from Hip Hop to House and hosts a show on Good Hope FM, Doctor’s in the House on Fridays (7-10pm) and Saturdays (6-10pm).
Dr Jules has been into music since first accompanying his dad to record shops as a child, and it's been his hobby and passion ever since. In fact, he can't think of a day in his life when music hasn't been present in some form or shape.
The mix he made for The Way of Us is a good example of what you can hear on his show and you can find out more about the OG DJ known for his scratching and beat mixing techniques in the Q&A interview after the jump.
How did you get into DJing?
My cousin, Natano, was a club DJ and an immediate role model. I recall listening to his recordings at that time and couldn't wait to experience the whole thing for myself. I convinced him to take me along to a club matinee at the age of 12 and I was hooked. I started going with him to his gigs almost every weekend and eventually my parents bought me my very first Rane mixer. I started doing mobile DJ functions like house parties, using cassettes and my dad's pioneer turntable. From there, I was fortunate enough to get noticed and took on my first residency as a matinee DJ at Club Concept when I was 16-years-old. Needless to say, I had to balance my part time DJ career with school, which in itself was a challenge. Eventually, I ended playing at Club Snap, The Arena and Club Galaxy as resident DJ. I did radio mixes for Good Hope FM and played at a number of their events.
What was the first album you bought?
Sonia Everybody Knows
How has your sound changed over the years?
My sound has evolved since I started. It has to if I am to remain current and keep up with the younger DJs and crowds. I embrace music and genuinely love what I do. I play mostly Commercial House with everything from Tec, Electro, Old School and Hip Hop in between. I like to combine the various elements in my sets by doing live mashups, scratches, etc.
What's in the mix you made for The Way of Us?
Some Commercial stuff and House mostly. Essentially, what I tend to play on my radio show, Dr's In The House on Good Hope FM.
Where should we play this?
Anywhere you want to start a party.
What are your tips for a better New Year's Eve?
Make sure you're surrounded by the right company and be safe. Things tend to get crazy around NYE when peeps go all out for a good time.
How should party-people with requests approach the booth?
Oh my… I would recommend writing the request down on a piece of paper and passing it along. I'm not really a fan of crowded DJ boxes.
