The Harrington is your ultimate transitional jacket

Everything you need to know about this season’s strongest outerwear piece

Harrington jacket

Freezing-then-warm-then-rainy-then-sunny days are here again — welcome to the transitional season. Confusing times like this call for foolproof style essentials and our favourite key piece going into SS18 is the Harrington jacket. Here’s everything you need to know about it: from its British origins and what sets it apart from other jackets to how to style it with this season’s strongest pieces.

A little history…

The OG Harrington jacket was the G9 by British brand Baracuta. After being worn by icons like Elvis Presley and Steve McQueen in movies and on stage. By the 70s, it had evolved from preppy essential to a feature in mod and punk style. Since then, several other brands have created their own iterations of the silhouette, changing details like the collar, cuffs or fabrication.

The makings of a Harrington

Harrington jackets are very similar to bombers in terms of their silhouettes: both have elasticated cuffs and waists and zip-through fronts. Harringtons, however, have a more formal look — they usually have a funnel neck collar with a two-button closure (although others can have turn-down collars instead) pockets with flap coverings and made from sturdy materials like cotton. Most of them have patterned lining on the inside, but this depends on the brand.

How to style it...

Like a boss: Dress it up for the office with an Oxford shirt, suit trousers and loafers. Socks optional.

For Casual Fridays: Be ready for that after-work cocktail with a printed shirt, cropped chinos and desert boots.

When it’s warmer: You might not need it once the temperature rises, but it’s a great add-on to flex in. Complete the look with a plain T-shirt, rolled-up rip-and-repair jeans and low-top kicks.
