The only outerwear you need this spring

Never have I been more excited at the prospect of summer. While winter is a season that I embrace wholeheartedly on account of the boots, chunky knits and enveloping coats, I have lost the drive and inspiration I had when the weather first cooled down. I want sand. I want summer dresses. I want sundowners. And I want them now.
But before I start a solo reenactment of the opening scene from Grease, let’s gain some perspective. It’s spring; and while the urge to whip on my sandals and gallivant off into the sunset grows stronger every day, warm spells are still few and far between, and a morning of sun could easily be followed by an afternoon of drizzling disappointment. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that spring jackets are your best friend. They pull together an outfit, express your style identity and will allow you to wear those high-waisted shorts or a maxi dress with shiver-free abandon.
This is our round-up of styles to focus on this season, and the only outerwear options you’ll need until the weather finally warms up.
The comeback kid
I’m not going to beat around the bush. I really thought we’d reached peak kimono around January of this year when, sitting on the side of a festival dance floor, I found myself utterly surrounded by boho cover-ups and flower crown combos. I, for one, was ready to say goodbye. But then winter happened and the memory of peak kimono faded from the collective fashion consciousness. In its place, a whole new generation of cover ups emerged, and oh, how pared-back and stylish they’ve become! Print and pattern are still present in the form of monochromatic designs but texture is now leading the way with lace, embroidery and fringing.
The cool classic
What? You didn’t think I’d write a blog post on outerwear without mentioning sports luxe, did you? We’ve discussed our loved for the bomber jacket here, and I’m about to do it again. Much like Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight, it’s a timeless classic and has retained its status since it became a streetwear staple a few decades ago. The focus has recently shifted to fabrication, and everyone from Stella McCartney to Rag & Bone included them in their S/S collections. Worn with a textured midi skirt and pointed heels, the bomber can breeze into the boardroom while simultaneously lending street cred to a simple tee and jeans combo on a night out.
The jack(et) of all trades
It’s amazing what a rise in temperature and a few extra minutes of daylight can do for one's enthusiasm. Before you’ve even had the chance to look in the mirror and tell yourself to exercise some self control, you’ve gone from brunch to drinks to a rooftop party. If these kinds of days teach us anything, it’s that mimosas for breakfast lead to poor life choices, but mainly that it’s essential to be prepared for a sudden change in the weather. Denim jacket to the rescue. Versatile and effortlessly cool, it goes with anything from jeans to dresses to high-waisted shorts, can transition from day to night, lunch to a festival, sushi to sundowners, and so it goes on. Boxy, cropped cuts are taking centre stage and go hand-in-hand with retro styling so why not try some denim on denim plus a graphic tee.
The tailored trailblazer
I think we can all agree that the award for innovation in outerwear this season goes to the blazer. Just when we thought we’d seen it all, the caped version breezed its way onto the scene, regal and statement-making in its structured draping. Next came the sleeveless blazer, loved by everyone from Rihanna to Kendall Jenner and ideal for adding warmth without covering up too much of an outfit.
No item of clothing says ‘I’ve got my life together’ quite like this tailored wonder and when you throw a cape blazer into the mix, it’s clear from a mile away that you mean business. Each style has the ability to elevate casual separates so layer up with distressed jeans or tapered trousers and be on your way!
The beauty of spring is twofold. Not only does the world seem to light up with possibilities again, but there’s magic to be found in the spontaneity that comes with a change in the weather. Make sure you don’t become that friend requesting to sit inside at Yourstruly on a perfectly sunny day because there’s a little nip in the air and invest in some spring outerwear options that will see you through the next few months in style!
