Mr Burns quits, David Brent returns, the Obama of Soweto and sex advice from Thom Yorke
In case you ever wondered why a Cheeky Nandos will always be our preferred chicken takeaway, a video has emerged of KFC employees rinsing off chicken pieces. Now while we’re big advocates of the “wash it off before you cook it” rule that applies to chicken, you can’t just arrange the pieces on the concrete floor at the back of your Braamfontein shop and then use a hosepipe. Let’s just say we find KFC’s latest let-down almost as disappointing as their Doritos Crunch Burger.
Confused, bemused and confuddled as to why anyone would even order a Doritos Crunch Burger in the first place? No worries, just #AskMmusi! The Twitter campaign had Tweeps seeking advice from the DA’s Great Black Hope, asking the Obama of Soweto things like “Which of your three accents is your favourite?”, “Did anyone ever discover who let the dogs out?” and “When I get up, where does my lap go?” #AskMmusi was trending in 3 hours with 70 000 tweets, and while we don’t want to bring race into what was a fun exercise for all, Black Twitter had far more retweetable material. #kekekeke
Sex Tips With Thom Yorke
A poster "about sex problems between couples" published in Iran randomly features Radiohead's Thom Yorke on the cover. There’s also a Russian ad featuring Yorke, stating: "We will help you to forget about your headache and insomnia." We salute the Radiohead frontman’s commitment to our wellbeing and wanting us to be fitter, happier, more productive, comfortable, not drinking too much, regular exercise at the gym…
Meanwhile, Wes Anderson has designed a bar, IRL, in Milan. There are pastel-coloured chairs, white cups with charming pink logos, and cakes that aren’t quite Mendl's but could be. Part of Prada's new art and culture complex called Fondazione Prada, the venue includes a The Life Aquatic-themed pinball machine and a jukebox housing 50s and 60s tunes. If you do visit, make sure your phone is charged. You’ll want to Instagram this.
Zak Tebbal, a man who had previously published a book of his tweets in order to keep a printed record of the times that we are living in, as well as a safety guide and tour of Central Park for tourist squirrels, has now turned Kanye West’s “Bound 2” music video into a children’s book. We loved that Seth Rogen and James Franco spinoff, but we love this riff as much as Kanye loves Kanye.
Noel Gallagher’s Tidal Wave
Okay, well, perhaps more of a one-fingered salute than a wave, our favourite Gallagher brother was quoted in Rolling Stone saying, “Do these people think they’re the fuckin’ Avengers? They’re going to save the fuckin’ world!”
The Amy Winehouse Doccie Trailer
From BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia, Amy tells the story of six-time Grammy winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words. Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film looks like a must-see.
Your iPhone will soon be able to connect to your kettle. Or something like that... The brand said that the first appliances that connect to Apple devices using their HomeKit software would be released in June.
Mr Burns Quits The Simpsons
After 26 years of service, Harry Shearer, the man who voiced Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Smithers, Kent Brockman, Reverend Lovejoy and Mr. Burns, called it quits with the legendary sitcom so that he could focus on new projects. The Simpsons, one of America’s longest-running and most celebrated series of all time, is under contract until 2017 and if you’re able to do a decent Mr. Burn’s – “Excellent” – or Ned Flanders – “Okilly-dokilly!” – then perhaps now is the time to send your CV off to Mr Matt Groening.
The David Brent Movie
The Office ran for two six-episode seasons in 2001 and 2002 and aired two Christmas specials in 2003, before calling it quits in order to preserve its quality. Since then Ricky Gervais has had his fair share of hits and misses – Extras, Life’s Too Short, An Idiot Abroad, Derek… Okay, so it looks like there were no misses, but still, it was his role as David Brent in The Office that we identified with most. Hallelujah, the feature length film Life on the Road has received funding and will tell the tale of David Brent working as a travelling salesman while chasing his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a tour with his band, Foregone Conclusion. The film promises to unveil more of the man’s private life than The Office ever did, and we can’t wait to be reunited with our favourite horrible boss, soonish.
